On Wednesdays We Wear Black...
There are so many things bothering me about the current state of our profession. As if it wasn't enough that society doesn't respect a teacher's value; to add insult to injury, in more rural areas of Oklahoma and Kentucky, teachers are paid such low wages that they often have to get another (several) jobs in order to survive. In fact, teachers in Oklahoma is ranked 49th in teacher salaries.
According to cnbc.com, the five lowest-paying states for high school teachers:
1. Oklahoma
Annual mean wage: $42,460
2. Mississippi
Annual mean wage: $43,950
3. South Dakota
Annual mean wage: $44,210
4. North Carolina
Annual mean wage: $45,220
5. West Virginia
Annual mean wage: $45,240
We give so much to our students, often times in the form of classroom supplies or furniture we purchase ourselves to make a more "home-y" place. Schools don't have the resources to give to us am so grateful for my Union and the teachers within it, fighting for our rights and our pay. Health costs are on the rise, as is everything, except for teacher's wages. It's just not right.
So, outside of getting more involved, I feel happy to support the efforts of my union with my "trendd" take on the black tee-shirt.
