Crazy Pants + Promposals
Okay, so prom is in two days and I have seen so many "promposals" outside of my classroom, as well as the student stories that trail in behind my students. All of it made me think about how these things have evolved since I was in high school. One boy, in particular, was overheard talking about how his date was "disappointed in his promposal". SAY WHAT?! I asked how he asked her, and well, to maintain confidentiality, let me just say it was VERY thoughtful, romantic, and expensive.
I felt dejected FOR him. For a high school kid, working part-time, his efforts should be applauded. Money was spent on the items to ask her, as well as paying for tickets, tuxedo, dinner, pictures, etc. It adds up! This isn't the same "get your dress at Windsor Fashions, go to dinner, then show up at the high school gym" Prom.
She still said yes to him, but in the posted picture on Instagram, I could tell she. was. not. happy. It was written all over her face. Now, whatever her reasons for her unhappiness should not be blamed on his asking her to prom, because it was so sweet.
I mean, what's with this? These couples are either a) already paired up by a "bus" director or b) prearrange that they're going together so WHY do they need an ornate proposal? Sometimes they're even the day before the dance and they have everything figured out! I don't get it.
As a mother of two young boys, is this what my sons are going to be expected to carry out? Will they have to fly overhead on a rocket with a flaming sign that proposes an expensive night out with him?! Ugh, I hope not. As a female-- a hopeless romantic type of female, I get it. I also don't want these young girls to skew their expectations when it comes to the moment they receive an actual marriage proposal. I also don't want these boys to do something creative and thoughtful and feel like their efforts aren't appreciated.
Did social media promote this? Is this elaborate scheme just for the 'gram? Someone explain it. I really want to know. Until that happens, check out my outift.
